Patented January 1, 1924 the design of these Floor Switches is so simple, yet so dependable that they function today the same as they did in 1924. Commonly referred to as “Dump Switches”, these are really Directional Determining Switches for Single Automatic Operation.
An F-3 is mounted in the Hatchway at each Intermediate Floor. The Switch is mechanical and spring loaded, operating off of a Stationary Cam on the car. When the Cam is on both of the rollers it forces the contacts open. As the Cam leaves the Switch the first roller off of the Cam is released, closing its contact thus determining the direction of travel. This contact remains closed until the Cam returns to the Switch causing it to force both contacts open again.
These are Cast Aluminum enclosures with sturdy cast brass contact levers and contacts designed to work at up to 250 volts AC or DC. The rollers are mounted on brackets adjustable in increments of 3/16”. The stationary carbon and copper contacts are heavy duty, long lived, and reversible.
